Take a stroll from Lē'ahi Lani to numerous lightly visited beaches for incredible beach experiences. If you have the need to be virtually alone at a palms-to-the-sand stretch of water, you can arrive there in minutes. Do you want to explore? Innumerable, award winning stretches of sand are easily found, and lesser known, less traveled beaches are within a quick drive.
Lē'ahi Lani is in surf mecca. The South Shore is most active with ground swells in the spring, summer and fall, and the area has hundreds of known and not-so-known surf breaks, ranging from easy rolling waves for beginners, to expert only breaks dominated by Pros and their media. However, the ocean off Diamond Head receives wind swells providing the area with year-round surf. If you are new to the sport, you can walk or ride a bike to Waikiki for a surf lesson or to ride its iconic rollers. If surfing is your passion, pick one of a hundred breaks between nearby Black Point up to Ala Moana that meets your liking. When you want to visit the North Shore, the closest break is about an hour away.
The best-known snorkeling location on Oahu is the world famous Hanauma Bay, which is a 25-minute scenic drive away. The Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District by the Waikiki Aquarium is a 15-minute walk. Shark’s Cove on the North Shore has been given the distinction of being one of the twelve best shore dives in the world. Scuba tours are available out of Honolulu harbors, Haleiwa, and Ko’Olina.
Oahu is home to famous hiking. Of course, there is the Diamond Head State Monument trail to the top of Diamond Head, the trail head is a 10-minute drive. Challenge yourself with the famous Koko Crater Arch Trail for an amazing workout and fabulous views. Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail, Lanikai Pillbox Trail, and the Manoa Falls Trail are must-dos.
Visit Iolani Palace, built in 1882 by King Kalākaua, the home of Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarchs and served as the official royal residence and the residence of the Kingdom’s political and social life until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. The Kapaemahu Stones are easily visited in Waikiki. The Royal Mausoleum is the final resting place of King Kamehameha II through King Kamehameha V, King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Solemnly visit the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, and the Battleship Missouri at Pearl Harbor to preserve the memories of the sacrifices made by servicemen and civilians in the Pacific theater throughout World War II.
Experience Hawaiʻi’s rich culture and heritage at the Bishop’s Museum. The Honolulu Museum of Art has extensive collections exhibiting and interpreting the art and culture of Hawaiʻi. Visit authentic villages and mingle with natives from six Pacific cultures as they demonstrate their arts, crafts and traditions at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
There are major shopping centers near Mālaʻe at Diamond Head. The International Marketplace, Royal Hawaiian Center, and Waikīkī Beach Walk are 1.8 miles away, and there are many luxury stores along Kalākaua Avenue. The Ala Moana center, 3.5 miles away, is the eighth largest shopping mall in the United States and the largest open-air shopping center in the world, with 350 stores, restaurants, and miscellaneous services.
